Driven to insanity by my husband's ultimate DIY project - a home recording studio - I've decided to document the process from the point of view of the wife that got left inside.
My name is Lauren, 26. I'm a high school teacher/stay at home Mum. Hubby is Adam, 35, a computer programmer by day - bass player/vocalist and live sound engineer by night. We live on the Gold Coast, QLD, with our beautiful son Ben, 10 months, our cat Bear, 13, and dog Roxy, 3. Adam and I have been married for almost 3 years, together for 6. In the whole time we've been together, Adam has always had a project on the go... usually several. There is a bit of a joke in our household that if Adam is not busy being busy, he's busy planning to be busy. This is a trait that seems to have been passed on to Ben, who is the busiest child I've ever known... and make no mistake - whatever it is the boys in my life are doing, it is IMPORTANT!
When Adam is interested in something, he generally immerses himself in it until he has mastered it... This is a trait I admire, but one that also takes up a lot of his time. He is never very happy about handing the reigns over to someone else; for example, we will never pay a builder/painter/plumber/cleaner/furniture removalist etc. when we can do the job ourselves. Adam spent about 1 year designing his dream recording studio in his spare time using
Google SketchUp. The technical stuff involved in such a design has been dinner table conversation at our house many an evening, and while I'm now a little more educated on the finer points of acoustics, I'm certainly no expert. I can say that Adam does not do things by halves, and this was no exception. Using his own design, Adam got his Owner/Builder's permit and received building approval.
As of October 2009, we got the go-ahead and we have 2 years to finish this project... That's only 2 years of weekends, early mornings and late nights to build a monstrous building with essentially several smaller buildings within, as well as a whole new deck, paving and pool fencing. Wish us luck.
I plan on getting Adam to inject some technical tid-bits here and there about each stage of the building... but, mainly, this will just be me and my observations.
Adam put together a quick animation of how the studio will look -
